What is HoboStripper?

Hobo Stripper is a blog that I (used to) update daily, sharing useful information and gritty, inspiring stories of my life as a hobo and a stripper. Many people like to live a little vicariously through my adventures. Others come here looking for information on their favorite plant or wondering how to really sell a gazillion lapdances a night. Hopefully, some of you are inspired through my adventures to ditch lifestyles that don’t suit you and follow your dreams.

Who is this Hobo Stripper?

My name is Tara and I live in a van. Down by the river. And I dance nekkid for money.

I grew up in Alaska, where I developed a passion for independence and learned not to be brainwashed by the dominant culture. In my teens I moved to the lower forty eight and traveled to live in seven different states in two years before I settled down and finished my BA in Psychology. But that was enough conventional living for me! As soon as I finished my degree I moved into a bus (though I quickly downsized to a van) and took off on an epic hobo stripping adventure. I’ve learned how to insulate my van windows with reflectix and how to squat inside the van and pee out of it. I’ve refined my lapdancing skills in a dozen states. I’ve met Jesus in a truckstop, spent weeks camping in canyons and by rivers, had a blissed out hippie rapper for Jesus on my bus, taught herbs in the tittie bar, learned about pimps, and had a lot of beautiful moments. I figure all this should be shared with the world, so I’m doing my best.

What are people saying?

I felt like I’d been ‘schooled by the time I finished the Hobo Stripper’s blog end to end. Aside from the afore-mentioned topics, she also waxes on the joys of living in Alaska, making righteous plant medicine on the road, interviewing her mom, and being a lifer in the stripper biz who has no interest in a “real” job. She’s such a good writer. And a DIYer. I got lost in her blog for hours. Don’t know whether to change my oil or shave my bottom next.Susie Bright

With articles like “Stripping 101: The Audition” alongside information on how to pee when you live in a van, we are totally set for our next road trip bachelor party.Nerve

She lives in a van and strips for a living. It’s got a kind of technomad, crimethinc, pre-post-proto cyberpunk feel to it; she almost seems to me like a character from a science fiction novel just past Delany but not yet to Gibson. fashionbeast

I have found an amazingly gutsy woman’s blog: An itinerant stripper who lives in a van with her dog and shares tips on how to stay alive, how to save money when showering in a laundromat as a teen and how to score meat off customers and she knows how to spin a rattlin’ good yarn. I’m awestruck by her independence and intelligence, so if I go on, I will sound like I’ve fallen in love. Read her blog. She has a lot of interesting, witty, profound and wise things to say.Apostate

Hobo Stripper… lives in a van somewhere in Alaska. Her experiences as an anti-civilization, feminist stripper are more real than the best chapters of Inga Muscio’s Cunt. Raw Canadian Girl

…a sort of feminist Jack Kerouac but with better writingTelfair

…Susan Weed and Charles Bukowski’s love child. – Grace

I love Tara’s writing, perspective, candor, and tone. I also love Bukowski, and Tara has a certain vaginal, Chinaski-flare going on sometimes. – Catholic School Teacher

…it’s like Steinbeck in a g-string. – Mac

The hobo stripper is an intelligent woman, traveling across America, who often relates her experiences with drunken men, their money, and living in a van. She’s well read, has a degree in psychology, and her easy going hippy vibe lets her casually speak of events most would mention only after taking an oath in court.Nathan

The way Hobo Stripper lives is an amazing example of how to live as a non-civilised person while using the master’s tools against him. She keeps herself safe while doing one of the most fundamental of all capitalist endeavours – selling a service, which costs her very little, to people who are willing to pay a premium for it. 3. I only recently found your blog and have yet to read more, but so far I’m excited by view of life: giving up convention to live the way you want.

I’ve been an escort, and am currently a dominatrix, and I’ve worked the stressful corporate job route as well. All I really want to do is spend several hours a day at my computer writing. I’m doing that now and it feels good.

Thanks for having this inspiring blog. I’ll be back to read more.

  4. hello

  5. Good for you for making your own path!! I’m a firm believer that life is too short NOT to live your dreams.

We are walking the talk as well – we’ll be taking off in three weeks with our ten-year-old twin sons to ride our bikes from Alaska to Argentina. It’ll be a fabulous experience and we’ll learn tons along the way!! You can follow our journey at http://www.familyonbikes.org

  6. I’ve been reading your blog for a while now- actually I come flying over here for a serious “fix” daily- I have like a bijillion questions for you!

I would give my left tit to be a hobo and live in a van. My ultimate dream is to keep going south till I run outta road.

I’d love to pick your brain sometime to get ideas on how to make my dream a reality- I’m in Mexico so there would be some different “issues” to navigate, but it sure seems to me that you’d have a damned good way to circumvent anything!

I hope to her from you!!

  7. Hey I read your article in New Witch magazine and absolutely LOVED it! The way you described your choice of profession was both very spiritually inspiriring and beautiful. Basically- I think you’re awesome : )

  9. The get up and go you have, passionate liberation, pussy bleeding glory. I walked from the end of my mind, found something more than struggling, the freedom in honoring OUR truth. Money cums from the ocean, the mountainous waves of fertile wings wrap around you, the child of angelic steel. The peace of your ancestors protects you. I send you love and burn the sage. I could write you, or send you books? Pen pals?

I channel love into your body.

    Sisters in love.

    Gertrude.

  10. dear tara,
(the email link is not working on my computer!)
    thank you so very much.
i’ve got some questions for you about clubs in minneapolis and also in washington state– also, did you go to the gathering in wyoming? (hell yeah)
since being little, i remember tossing around the idea of being a stripper in order to save up for overseas travels. and so stumbling upon your stories was such good luck!

    take care of yourself–
    maisie

  11. Hey Maisie, my email is hobostripper@gmail.com. Minneapolis and Washington are literally the two worst places I know of for dancing. All those horrible stripper stereotypes you hear about? Twenty dollar blow jobs and crack whores? They come from Seattle and Minneapolis. I’m serious. I know I don’t portray that part of the industry here, but it’s because I don’t go to places like Washington and Minneapolis. Seriously, avoid at all costs.

A lot of twin cities women travel to North Dakota, though? That might work for you?

I didn’t make it to the gathering this year. I always want to but I always would rather go home teo Alaska once spring hits…

  12. I just discovered your blog and I think I’m in love. I had thought about doing a similiar thing because it pretty close to what I have been doing, which is porno-cationing…anyways I love you…

  13. You rock Tara!

I love your blog. I just went back to dancing after having a baby, getting married, and moving down south. Needed a lil’ pick me up to get my groove back in the industry- now this the kinddah crack I’m talkin’ about! Luv it!

My husband’s been telling me to read Ishmael forever, it’s on my list but after your glowing review it may need to be bumped up.

Baby’s calling. Just wanted to send out some luv. And if you’re ever in the area- holla!

btw- your contact page doesn’t work. I’d love to hear from you. Keep the posts comin’!

  14. Tara – Your website is amazing, I am in the process of trying to get one together and am hoping for a little direction from you if possible? I have been living in my van and and need to make a website for this mobine business idea i’ve got… I don’t know anything about buying a domain name or making a website. I was wondering, how did you get started? Could you email me on a recommended site to buy my domain name and how you knew what to do to build your site? You don’t know how much I would appreciate any leg-up on getting started. No money lately has gotten me a little down in my van BUT i have an idea!! 🙂 thx ~ Falia, supersoggy@hotmail.com

  15. Hey Lass! Phat site. Tried to find a email to give you a personal invite but alas there is none. I’m not surprise. Your email would probably be swamped by your adoring fans. LOL

Anyway I wanted to invite you to join Bus Village. And I believe you know Pixie from the Enchanted Gypsy. She is there. Thought Bus village and you could benefit from shared knowledge. Come hang out with us.

  16. Wow, I’m blown away and I haven’t even finished the first page!

I absolutely love the idea of your freedom and how you consciously say you hope this is an inspiration for people to follow their dreams. Love it love it love it, looking forward to reading your blog very much.

  17. (I mistakenly posted this in the wrong place I believe, so I am re-posting it here)

I ran across your site and stopped to read and pay you a visit. You are a wonderfully free spirit Tara and I admire you greatly for that. I love your writings and the openness with which you so freely give to others.

There are not many of us who have to courage to be truly free. I envy you Tara. Maybe someday I will find the courage to join you.

I hope your life is filled with miracles Tara. If you ever make it to Florida, it would be great just to spend a day talking.

    Peace,
    Jonathan
